War to Friendship: 65 Years Later

On April 25th, Ukrainian Open World delegates had the pleasure to share in the celebration of 65th anniversary of the meeting of Soviet and American troops at the Elbe River, in Newton, IA.  The meeting of these troops on April 25th 1945 is thought to be a symbolic symbol of the brotherhood-in-arms between the two nations during World War II.

The ceremony honored the veterans and their families, from both nations, for their service and bravery during the battle of Elbe River.  The event was special to the Ukrainian delegates and Iowans, because the troops that met that day consisted of primarily Ukrainians, in the Soviet Army, and Iowan, in the United States army.  As everyone remembered those who fought that day, they were reminded of how two areas of the world, similar in values and beliefs, shall forever be linked to one another.

The significance of the Elbe River anniversary did not go unnoticed by President Obama and President Medvedev, of Russia, who both issued official statements to recognize and honor what these troops accomplished on that day.  They noted that what was achieved on April 25th 1945 must not be forgotten and should be called upon as Russia and the United States continue to build their partnership for the sake of a secure and prosperous world.  With the “spirit of the Elbe” together both nations can meet the challenges of the struggling world.
